THE inspirational story of a hero climber who made a miraculous escape from almost-certain death has been handed out free by East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson.

She marked the second year of World Book Night by giving out copies of ‘Touching the Void’ by Joe Simpson. Ms Swinson delivered copies of the book to Kirkintilloch Mountaineering Group (left) and to a group of young people in Parliament. She will also visit Low Moss Prison.

The MP said: “I was delighted to be part of World Book Night again and it’s always a pleasure to give to others. By giving away books I hope to spread my joy and passion for reading with others.

“The story of Joe Simpson, the mountaineer who had to overcome immense physical challenges to avoid death after a terrible climbing accident, is simply awe-inspiring.

“Combining my love of this book with a mission to motivate all who read it made this book a great choice.”
