Tracey’s marathon challenge

A woman who watched her mother struggle with Alzheimer’s is running the London Marathon to raise money for a charity that helped her.

Tracey Ward (42) from Bearsden will be taking part in the famous run in April 2016 for Alzheimer Scotland.

She’s taking on the challenge to thank them for all the support and care they offered to her mum, Pat Lynn, who sadly passed away in August this year after a ten year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Pat, also from Bearsden, worked in the local libraries so she was a well-known face around Bearsden and Milngavie.

Tracey said: “Throughout her illness, she was supported massively by the charity.

“Among other things mum benefited from support groups , carers’ support group and most recently fantastic day care in Milngavie where she was cared for by amazing Alzheimer Scotland staff.

“I want to raise money to thank them, to enable them to deliver their amazing services to other people and of course, to honour my lovely mum.”

Tracey has enlisted the help of family and friends to do other fundraising activities to help her reach her £2,000 target.

Among other things, she raised £1668 by packing people’s shopping in Asda, Bearsden on Sunday, November 22.

In addition to funds, Tracey hopes that her efforts will have other benefits.

She said: “There’s no doubt that a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is very difficult for everyone involved.

“I’m always very open when talking about my mum and our experience as I think it’s important to understand the disease more and break down any taboos.

“Dementia is not just about memory problems and there are a number of challenges, particularly as the disease progresses.

“However support is available through organisations such as Alzheimer Scotland, support which allows people with dementia to live as well as possible for as long as possible, as my mum did”.
