Tribute paid to tragic miners
A poignant memorial service was held on Sunday to remember the men who were killed in one of Scotland’s worst mining disasters.
The Auchengeich disaster happened on September 18, 1959, when a fire killed 47 miners who had become trapped underground.
A service is held every year at the Auchengeich memorial in Moodiesburn to allow the community to pay their respects and remember lost family members.
In 2009 a special bronze statue of a miner was unveiled marking the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.
