A POPULAR sports hall is to get a much-needed makeover thanks to a bumper cash boost.

Twechar Community Action has received an early Christmas present of £50,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

The award was made as part of the fund’s Village SOS scheme.

The scheme was launched last year and is dedicated to improving facilities in rural communities with a population of 3,000 people or less.

A spokesperson said: “The Wee Village Big Venue will create a multipurpose community centre which can hold a variety of activities suitable for all ages.

“The increased use of the facility will help generate income through hire fees which will be re-invested into the project to make it self-sustaining.”

Jackie Killeen, from the Big Lottery Fund Scotland, said: “These projects show what can be achieved when communities pull together towards a single goal.”
