A man and woman have died in the early hours of Sunday, May 15, following a road traffic crash in Balmore Road, near Bishopbriggs.

Kieran Lundie (21) and Gemma McMonagle (24), both from Glasgow, have been named by police as the deceased.

The accident happened at around 12.45am, when Mr Lundie was driving a blue coloured Ford Focus car north on Balmore Road, near to Skirsa Street.

The car apparently went out of control causing it to leave the carriageway and collide with a wall and railings before coming to a halt in the waters of the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Police, fire and ambulance services attended the crash where the driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 25-year-old woman and two men aged 25 and 24 years, who were also passengers in the car, were taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The 25-year old woman’s condition is described by hospital staff as critical.

The 25-year-old man is said to be stable and the 24-year-old man escaped serious injury but was treated for shock.

A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Sergeant Nicola Taylor at the Road Policing Complex at Helen Street, Govan said: “Our enquires are continuing into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. It would appear that no other vehicle was involved and I would like to speak to anyone who either witnessed this crash or anyone who remembers seeing the vehicle travelling in Balmore Road just prior to the crash.”
