AMBITIOUS plans to promote Kirkintilloch as a top destination for walkers have taken a major step forward.

Penny Sinclair, of the Strathkelvin Ramblers, last year single-handedly got ‘Walkers Are Welcome’ status for the town and, thanks to a £3,000 grant from Awards For All and company ‘Signs Of The Times’, signs have now been placed on the seven roads entering Kirkintilloch. Penny said: “When I heard about other towns taking part in this initiative I thought ‘why shouldn’t Kirkintilloch get involved too?’We have fabulous walks here with the canal, the railway walkway and, of course, the Campsies. This is an ideal way to promote them.”

Campsie and Kirkintilloch North Councillor John Dempsey added: “The council backs this scheme and has provided in-kind support to get the new signs put up. We will continue to work with Penny to help the town make the most of its new status.”

The new Kirkintilloch Walkers are Welcome steering group will have its inaugural meeting on Monday, February 28, in the Healthy Habits shop in Cowgate at 3pm. Anyone interested in joining the steering group will be welcome. Penny and Councillor Dempsey are pictured next to one of the new signs.
