POLICE are aiming to crack down on shoplifting in the run-up to Christmas.

The scheme, which will see police work closely with East Dunbartonshire Council, aims to slash the “vast sums of money” lost by businesses in Kirkintilloch each year to criminals.

Sergeant John McSorland, from Kirkintilloch police, said: “Traditionally shoplifting increases at this time of year and we are determined to do everything we can to reduce such incidents”.

Retailers will be advised to ensure they have adequate security to deter thieves, while CCTV will be closely monitored.
