PLANS to close a busy road for almost two weeks have been slammed.

North Lanarkshire Council is due to start resurfacing work on Drumcavel Road in Muirhead on Monday, April 2.

But firms who are based on the road say it will have a major impact on business.

David McColl, owner of Goodfellows skip hire and demolition, said: “It’s going to be a nightmare for two weeks.

“We haven’t had any notification yet about the work. There are six businesses on the road, including car repairs and a car wash. Many rely on passing trade. We have large vehicles and need to go along the road to get to the M73 motorway. I can’t afford to close the businesses.”

He added: “Why can’t they close half the road? The council has been very unhelpful.”

However, Alex Ramsay, assistant business manager (roads operations) at the council, said: “The resurfacing work on Drumcavel Road is essential to ensure the continued safe operation of the road. The work has been planned to take place over the school holidays when traffic is lighter to minimise the disruption.

“Details of the programme of work are being finalised with the contractor and we will be providing information on the road closure and works to all properties on Drumcavel Road within the area of the closure.

“Officers spoke to two of the local businesses earlier this month about the planned works and we will make every effort to allow restricted access to businesses during the works.

“The road cannot be done using temporary traffic lights as the road is not wide enough to allow traffic to travel safely on one side at a time.”

The road is due to be closed between April 2 and April 13.
