TALENTED Andrea Gaffney leapt into podium finish at this year's British under-17 and under-15 athletics championships in Birmingham.
The 14-year-old recorded a personal best display to win silver in the under-15 girls long-jump.

Despite only taking up the sport in January, the Lenzie Academy pupil jumped 5.47 metres, missing out on a gold medal by just 2cm.

Andrea said: "My
PE teacher introduced me to long jumping and entered me in the Scottish Schools championship for a bit of experience.

"But I won a bronze which made me think I might have a natural talent for it.

"I was really looking forward to the championships in Birmingham and wasn't too nervous as I just wanted to go out and enjoy it.

"I was in contention for a bronze before I jumped my personal best to get up to silver.

"I was ecstatic, and it was brilliant winning another medal."

Andrea was joined at the championships by other girls from Lenzie Academy.

Chloe Lambert narrowly missed out on a medal in the under-15 200m, finishing fourth with a personal best time of 25.74 seconds.

Deborah Hannah, despite an injury, finished the 1500m in 5mins 16secs, while big sister Jennifer reached the under-17 300m final, finishing fifth with a time of 41.49s.
