Lady Darling Cup quarter-final
ARMED with true grit, determination and passion for their club, Campsie Black Watch Under-19s pulled off the unthinkable as they beat East Kilbride Thistle 2-1 to get to the semi-final of the under-21 Lady Darling Cup.
A good crowd at Station Road on Saturday witnessed a hard-fought match between both teams.
The young Watch started the game brighter and good chances fell to Rankin and McIlroy to put their team in front in the first 10 minutes.
However, it was the visitors who opened the scoring on the 16th minute.
Good play by Finlay on the left sent a ball between McLaren and Watt for Thistle's striker Fletcher to hammer an unstoppable shot past Darroch.
In the remaining half-hour of the first half, young Watch were controlling most of the play and Darroch's goal was well protected by Watt, Finlayson, McLaren and Boal.
Just before half-time Campsie grabbed their well-deserved equaliser when Duff took a long throw-in on the right and McLaren out-jumped everybody to flick the ball on to Rankin, who headed home from close in.
After the break the young Watch midfield began to get on top of the game, Davis, McGeough and Rankin were giving the striker great support.
On the 56th minute Campsie were awarded a penalty kick when McLuskey cleverly picked out Duff inside the box. The striker weaved through two defenders only to be sent crashing to the ground. The referee had no option, but to point to the spot. Davis placed the ball and sent a left-foot shot high into the net.
On the hour mark McLuskey broke free from a ruck of players in the box to thunder home a right foot shot into the net.
But to everyone's amazement the referee chopped the goal off and gave a free kick for Thistle.
The longer the game went on the more confident and determined young Watch were to go to the very end and put themselves into the semi-finals of the Lady Darling Cup.
Birdston Kennels man-of-the-match was Steven Davis.
Team: Darroch, Watt, Finlayson, McLaren, Boal, McIlroy, Davis, McGeough, Rankin, McLuskey, Duff, Daly, Hattie, Barbour, Black, McStay, Miloy, Daremas.
