A TALENTED athlete has broken two British records at the European Deaf Athletics Championships.

John Ruddy (20), from Kirkintilloch, won bronze in the 200m and came fourth in the 100m finals at the championships in Turkey, after setting two blistering times of 22.23seconds and 10.9 seconds respectively.

His phenomenal 100m performance has also ranked him as the fourth best deaf runner over that distance in Scotland, a jump of 26 places on his last position of 30th.

It’s the second time the former Lenzie Academy pupil has competed for Britain in the Championships after taking part in the event in Bulgaria in 2007.

In an interview in this week’s Kirkintilloch Herald, John said: “I’m really proud to have won bronze, especially since it’s my first medal for Britain.

“It was great and in the 200m there was just two milli-seconds between third and fourth.”
