EXCITEMENT is reaching fever pitch as dinosaurs and the Dark Side prepare to collide – on roller skates – in Glasgow this weekend.

Glasgow Roller Derby (GRD) will hold the final instalment of its thrilling 2013 Home Teams season on Saturday (November 9).

Battling it out for the coveted title of top Home Team 2013 are the deadly Death Stars and the terrifying Tyrannosaurus Wrecks.

Expect Jurassic sparks to fly when this year’s top teams clash in an all-or-nothing bout which will decide which team of super skaters claim the bragging rights and the legendary Home Teams trophy.

And as a warm-up, sports fans of all ages will be treated to a play-off between the Bad Omens and Hell’s Belles for third place.

The GRD double-headers are legendary affairs and this Saturday offers your last chance of 2013 to see all of Glasgow’s gallus skaters in action.

Prepare for an afternoon of all-action, full-contact family fun – filled with excitement, energy and high-octane thrills and spills.

For the uninitiated, roller derby – a predominantly female sport – is a thrilling collision of skill, physical contact, tactics and guts – played on an oval, flat track over two halves of full-on, heads-up action.

A GRD spokeswoman said: “The Home Teams events are always brilliant fun and really exciting, but this Saturday is very special as it’s the grand final.

“After three double-header bouts during the year it all comes down to Saturday. The Death Stars have really shown they have the Force in abundance and they will be keen to lock their tractor-beam on the Home Teams trophy.

“But this year’s surprise package has been the T-Wrecks, who have done brilliantly well in their first year as a team. Will they roar to victory or will the Death Star leave them stunned? There’s only one way to find out.

“As if that wasn’t enough, the opening bout will see the Bad Omens clash with Hell’s Belles in a play-off for third place. No-one wants to finish last so expect a fired-up performance from the belles from Hell against the GRD team who put the super into superstitious!

“If you’ve never been to a bout it’s a great way to get to know the sport and the wonderful skaters who compete for GRD.

“There will be merchandise on sale, cakes, refreshments and plenty of entertainment for everyone.

“The best players regularly star for GRD as part of our A-team – Irn Bruisers – and B-team – Maiden Grrders – so the Home Teams bouts are a great way to give the rest of the top-notch talent at GRD a chance to show their skills in front of friends, family and fans – alongside international skaters.

“Come along and choose a team to shout and clap for – and experience the fastest-growing female sport in the world right here in Glasgow.”
