Cumbernauld secured a controversial victory over ten man Rob Roy on Saturday in a game littered with on-field flashpoints.

Meetings between the two sides have often proven to be well-contested and last weekend’s league encounter was no different.

Both sides had early opportunities to take the lead with Jamie Hunter’s effort from distance taken confidently by home keeper Barry Fraser.

Minutes later, at the other end, Jonathan Murdoch did well to save a low drive from Davie Dickson.

In the fifteenth minute Scott Upton rifled his shot over the bar before Jordan McKechnie failed to make the desired contact with Upton’s cross from the right wing.

However, Rob Roy continued to create chances add Martin Brogan saw his glancing header fly inches beyond the upright.

At the other end Danny Boyle’s header was brilliantly finger-tipped wide by Murdoch as the ball was soaring into the top corner of the net.

Play continued to rage back and forth before tempers flared just ten minutes after the interval.

A challenge from United full back James Brown left Paul Finnigan lying in a heap on the turf. The Rabs’ dugout was incensed as players from both sides rushed to the scene.

A melee then broke out and it was some time before the three officials could restore some form of order.

After a considerable period of consultation between the referee and his assistants, United’s Brown and Rabs Brogan were yellow carded before the referee flashed a straight red to Gary McMenamin for his part in the fracas.

The Rabs were left feeling hard done by as their pleas for Brown to be dismissed for his tackle fell on deaf ears.

Ten minutes later and Cumbernauld broke the deadlock via the head of Ross Foley.

However, Rob Roy were still very much in the game and continued to press United.

With around ten minutes remaining the scores were levelled as Kenny Jarvis and Scott Morton combined well for Ryan Tiffney to rattle the ball past two defenders on the goal-line.

But with the game evenly poised at 1-1, Rob Roy were dealt a late hammer blow in the form of Brown — who they felt should have been dismissed earlier in the game.

The United full back fired a speculative cross into the Rabs goalmouth. Murdoch clutched from the air only to lose his footing with the ball trundling behind him.
