An Adam Coakley first half double gained full points for Rob Roy, who were forced to battle throughout against a determined Kilbirnie side.

Rabs got off to an ideal start when in the third minute Coakley beat keeper McCann to a perfectly-flighted Gormley cross to bullet home a header.

Rabs came close to adding to their lead when Fulton sent a 20-yard free-kick narrowly past the post before McCann blocked an Easton shot with his foot.

Ladeside came more into the game with Pettigrew sending a drive just wide.

Then Rabs defender McLachlan did well to block a dangerous Seagrave cross for a corner.

With Rabs pressing to increase their advantage Easton had a goalbound effort blocked on the line by McKinnon.

Minutes later the visitors equalised when Robertson appeared to have a Stevie Miller 25-yard shot covered, but slipped – allowing the striker’s shot to sail into the net.

Rob Roy regained the lead on the stroke of half-time when clever wing play by MacKay gave Gormley the opportunity to switch the ball to Coakley, who showed a fine display of composure to slot the ball past McCann.

The visitors began the second half on the attack with McGregor testing Robertson with a header then Pettigrew dragged a shot wide of the post. Ladeside had loud appeals for a penalty kick for handball against McBride turned down by referee Lowe, who awarded a corner kick.

At the other end keeper McCann saved from a Gormley header.

The visitors looked threatening going forward, but found Rabs’ recent signing Jordan Smith commanding in central defence.

McBride came to Rabs’ rescue 10 minutes before the end when he cleared an Arthur shot off the line with Robertson beaten.

In the final minutes both sides could have scored. Substitute Mackie’s shot was smothered by McCann and Smith made an important block to prevent the Ayrshire side leaving with a point.

Rob Roy: Robertson, McLachlan, McBride, Smith, A Lindsay, Donnelly, MacKay (Doyle 69), Fulton, Gormley (Cairney 82), Coakley (Mackie 69), Easton. Sub not used – McAleenan.
