All the action from the 27th Lenzie Festival – U16s

FORGET the Euros, there were goals galore as the Lenzie Festival continued...

Caledonian FC............ 1

DFDL side Lenzie faced old friends WSYFL team Caledonian FC from Prestwick on Saturday at their festival and got off to the best of starts when Duffy rifled a 25-yard screamer into the top corner after five minutes.

Cally pressed forward again and again, and got their reward when they were awarded a dubious penalty which was converted by Dalziel to make the score 1-1.

Late in the second half, Lenzie’s Cullen sent Richford away on the right and his pass found Duffy, who side-footed the ball from a tight angle with his left foot for what proved to be the winner. Cally felt another penalty should have been awarded to them late in the game, but the referee waved play on.

In the other game LFDA side East End Thistle won 1-0 against West Park Utd.

LENZIE met Bishopbriggs team West Park in their next game and after a nervy start a Richford long throw-in was headed home by guest player Shanks from close range.

It took Lenzie 10 minutes to score their second when Richford drove home a Connelly pass from 18 yards.

The second half saw Park come close through MacKay and Fraggle.

Lenzie’s McGuire then fired home an angled shot from wide on the right following good work by Shanks. The other section game saw Caledonian win 4-0 against East End.

East End Thistle...... 1

LENZIE made a few changes in their final section game as they had qualified for the cup final. They found East End a handful as they pressed forward with the knowledge that the other section game – Cally vs West Park – was going their way with West Park winning 3-1.

Lenzie took the lead on the stroke of half-time when McGuire headed in a Cullen cross. After the break, Duffy was upended in the box and Cassidy drove home goal number two. Straight from the kick-off East End player Denny fired the ball from the halfway line over Lenzie keeper Maguire and into the net for a superb goal. Lenzie were on the back foot for the rest of the game as the visitors pushed for the draw that would take them to the final.

LYC Festival Cup Final

LENZIE raced into a four-goal lead in the first half with some great wing play on both flanks by Roberts and Campbell. The first goal came in only four minutes when Cullen and Campbell combined to set up Richford.

His 18-yard shot flew low into the net. Minutes later Campbell and Reilly set up Maguire for goal number two.

It took Lenzie two more minutes to get their third – Cullen side-footed home following great play on the right by Duffy and Maguire.

With half-time approaching, the home side got a fourth when Duffy drove home after great work by Greer, Inglis and Roberts.

In the second half Lenzie made a few changes, using all their subs as they chased their third trophy of the season, however, Caledonian never gave up and managed to score twice during the second period, but time ran out for the Ayrshire men.

In the Plate Final, East End beat West Park 2-1 in a closely-fought game.

Lenzie President Gerry Gallagher presented the medals and trophies to the teams and thanked all who made the festival a success including the council groundsmen, caretaker, Lenzie officials and players from all the teams.

Lenzie are pictured with their third trophy of the season adding to the DFDL League and DFDL Cup. The team have also reached the finals of the Giffnock SC and Caledonian festivals and the quarter-finals of the WSCYP, Scottish and Region cups.
