THE 26th Lenzie Youth Football Festival – 11-a-side competition - started off on the Friday evening with the Under-15 section – with the top two teams going through on even points, to play off for the trophy.

What a cracker of a game they served up, showing different styles, with Park Villa passing the ball about and Lenzie closing down well and hitting on the break.

It was always going to be a close encounter and Park Villa edged it with a superb strike on goal.

The referees gave Park Villa’s right back the player of the tournament award.

In the Plate play off, West park edged out Westerton B.C.

On the Saturday it was the turn of the Under-13s and last year’s winners, Rossvale, were dominant in all three games and lifted the trophy again, beating Lenzie in the final.

In the Plate play-off Milngavie B.C. won with a 2-0 victory over Greystone Rovers from Dumfries.

The referees awarded the Rossvale striker no.9 the player of the tournament award.

The 14s festival was always going to be close and with three teams collecting six points this is how it turned out.

Celtic girls won their first two games, against Everton Boys and Heston Rovers, but losing 3-0 to Lenzie in their third game relegated them to the Plate, where they beat Heston 2-0.

Everton had beaten Lenzie 4-3 in the league set-up so they contested the final. Lenzie had learned from their defeat and went on to win the trophy 5-1 (pictured). The player of the tournament went to Lenzie no.7, Conor Mclaughlin.

The U-17 event was due to take place on Monday and will be reported next week.

Once again the fields prepared by East Dunbartonshire Council were in immaculate condition, the referees supplied by Donnie Brooks were of a high standard and Lenzie Youth Club would like to thank all their sponsors – without whom the festival could not take place.

The seven-a-side competition takes place over June 18-20. Lenzie would like to invite all local residents along to witness top-class football being played at Lenzie Academy playing fields, when there will also be fun fours, as well as Soccer Sevens.
