LENZIE YC U-15s were the toast of East Dunbartonshire after winning the Central Region Cup Final.
Notre Dame SA............. 1
Lenzie YC U15............. 3
The top two teams in the C&KDYL met for their second Region Final in a row at Stenhousemuir and for the sixth game against each other this season.
Like previous encounters, a good game of football was expected. Notre Dame, with the wind at their backs, started well and striker Hamilton had an early effort just over the crossbar.
At the other end diminutive strikers Maguire and Duffy were causing problems for the home defence with their intelligent running and passing play. Lenzie opened the scoring early in the first half. A corner from the left was cleared, the ball fell 20 yards out to Duffy. His quick thinking and fine shot deceived keeper Nelson and the ball went in off the post.
The Notre Dame keeper was injured during this spell.
Lenzie dominated for the next 20 minutes and got goal number two when a great move involving Reilly, Campbell and Maguire allowed Shanks to drive in from the right along the by-line. His shot flew over the Notre Dame keeper and ended up in the net.
The second half saw Notre Dame face the high wind and Lenzie pressing on the break through Roberts, Maguire and Duffy.
Notre Dame pulled a goal back midway through the second half when Hamilton and Taylor combined on the left to allow Caughey a shot from 12 yards which beat keeper Johnson low into the corner. Notre Dame pushed for the equaliser to take the game the full distance, but a Lenzie counter attack on the right – with a great passing move between Stone, Richford and Duffy – saw the ball land at the feet of Jordan Campbell. His 15-yard shot flew high into the net for the third Lenzie goal.
Notre Dame never gave up and stout defending from Hardie, Connelly, Davidson and Irvine was needed to keep their forwards at bay.
At the other end Murray, Steven and Cassidy were keeping the Notre Dame defenders on their toes with each attack.
SIS and SYFA Player of the Day was Maguire.
It was a double celebration that night for Lenzie Youth Club as chairman Gerry Gallagher, founder Ian Stevenson and club and U-15 team head coach Billy Inglis were presented with the SFA Quality Mark Certificate by SYFA secretary Jim Dolan and SFA Central Region’s Alan Taylor.
