Cntral League Cup

Rob Roy won through to the last sixteen of the Central League Cup but were forced to battle against a determined Super First Division side.

Rabs took the game to their opponents from the start with Jarvis bringing out a smart save from Greenock’s keeper Monk.

Rob Roy continued to press and the shot-stopper was again in action minutes later saving from Sawyers before the keeper made a further fine stop diving low to his left to deny Ronalds well placed strike.

The Adamslie Park side took a 37th minute lead when Deas gave Monk no chance with a well struck 20 yard shot which hit the post on its way into the net. Docherty had a chance to equalise for Greenock but home keeper Connolly was quick to spot the danger and blocked his effort at the edge of the penalty box.

On the stroke of half-time Rabs extended their lead when Sawyers nodded a Deas free-kick into the the Greenock net.

In the 50th minute Deas had the ball in the Greenock net only to have it disallowed for offside then from a Sawyers cross Ronald’s drive was blocked by Monk. Rabs suffered a major setback in the 55th minute when leading goal-scorer Willie Sayers was red carded for a dangerous tackle on Jamieson.

The visitors clawed a goal back in the 57th minute when Craig’s corner was knocked into the net by Docherty. Five minutes later Greenock were also reduced to ten men when Greenock’s Irvine was sent off for a reckless tackle on Deas.

Connolly came to Rabs’ rescue when he brilliantly pushed Craig’s snapshot over the bar as Greenock went all out for parity then Craig was only inches away from connecting with a Dow cross.

With six minutes remaining substitute Urquhart was fouled by Williams as he ran through on goal. Referee Graham awarded a penalty kick and sent off the Greenock player. Substitute Urquhart stepped up and coolly slotted the spot-kick past Monk. The nine men visitors were not finished however and scored again in the 86th minute when Downie sent a magnificent 25 yard drive high into Connolly’s net to set up a tense few minutes for the home side.

In the end Rabs just held on, but it was far from being a comfortable victory.
