IN a match spoiled by a swirling wind, both sides had chances to win the game, but on reflection a score draw was a fair result in the end.

First chance fell to Ashfield after only two minutes when Thomson, through on goal, fired over Robertson’s bar. Then as play swung to the other end Diack broke down the left flank at pace, but miss-hit his cross, which was cleared for a corner kick.

The home side were having the better of the opening exchanges with Chalmers just shooting wide.

A timely tackle from Rabs skipper Smith then prevented Martin’s run into the penalty box before Maxwell’s shot from a Halliday corner was scrambled clear. Minutes later Hall hooked an effort over the bar when in a good goal-scoring position.

On the half-hour mark Doyle broke clear of the home defence, but fired into the side netting when a cross into the goal-mouth was a better option. Minutes later Gormley did well to win the ball on the left before sending over a perfect cross, but Diack could only stab past the post from close range.

Ashfield were having the better of the play leading up to the interval and had chances to take a half-time lead when Maxwell rose to head a cross from the right against the crossbar.

Indecision in the Rabs defence allowed Hall a clear-cut goal scoring opportunity, but he skied his effort high over the bar.

In the 50th minute, Lindsay did well to clear a Martin shot off the line then Robertson made a fine diving save from Hall. Midway through the second half Rabs gained control of the game with Diack’s effort inches wide of the target and Easton heading a Diack cross just wide.

Gormley then lobbed the ball against the bar following an error from keeper Nugent. Rabs snatched a 66th minute lead when defender Willie McLachan collected a loose ball 35 yards from goal and his stunning volley sped through a crowded goal-mouth before nestling in the corner of Nugent’s net.

The hosts pulled themselves back level in the 77th minute after they were awarded a soft free-kick 25 yards out. Thomson drilled the kick low into the Rabs net despite Robertson getting a hand to it.

In the final minutes, Diack blasted the ball over the bar then Gormley had a header cleared off the line. At the other end Hall crashed a shot against Rabs’ bar as the sides settled for a share of the spoils.
