Manager-less Rob Roy were taught a harsh lesson in finishing as the Ayrshire side gave the Rabs a 6-1 thrashing.

The opening period was evenly contested with Rabs keeper McNeil making a smart save from Kinney, while Rabs skipper for the day Paul McQuilken fired inches past the Ladeside upright.

The home side took a 10th minute advantage when Alan Kinney fastened on to free-kick and, with the Rabs defence looking for the offside flag, cleverly prodded the ball over the head of the advancing McNeil into the net. Five minutes later the Kilbirnie side doubled their lead. From a well-worked low corner kick from McKeever, McGuire smashed the ball home from a few feet.

To their credit Rabs battled back with Sinclair taking a McQuilken pass in his stride, but lofting over the bar. Then Gow, through on goal, fired wide with only the keeper to beat. Minutes later the same player with the whole goal to aim at fired into the side netting. Sinclair then headed a Gow corner kick over.

Rabs midfielder Dean Muir picked up a bad rib injury on the half-hour mark which required treatment and was replaced by MacKay.

Rob Roy pulled a goal back in the 31st minute when a Craig Feroz shot was deflected on its way into the net.

However, Ladeside restored their two-goal lead six minutes later when McQuilken conceded a foul 20 yards from goal. The free-kick taken by McGuiness found the head of the ever-dangerous McKinney who nodded home to put his side 3-1 in front.

The second half resumed in similar fashion with Ladeside well in command and playing slick passing football. McGregor should have put the home side further ahead, but blazed over the bar.

At the other end Rabs were creating and squandering chances. McQuilken saw his free-kick easily taken by McCann then from a Zok cross McGregor’s header was saved low down by the Ladeside keeper.

With the home side in the ascendancy it was no surprise when they extended their lead in the 74th minute with Montgomery adding the final touch. Crosses were a continued menace to the Rabs defence and failure to deal with one from the right allowed substitute Miller to net the fifth from a suspiciously off-side position. Minutes from the end Kinney completed his hat-tick, and the rout, by nodding home a cross ball from the left.

Rob Roy: McNeil, Dunlop, Sheridan. Carter, McGregor, Sinclair, Muir (MacKay 30), McQuilken (Upton 74), Feroz, Zok, Gow (Craig 64). Subs not used: Palmer, Wilson.
