Lenzie footballers flying the flag for Scotland

LENZIE Youth Club’s 1997 section have provisionally accepted an invitation to represent Scotland at Under-15 level in the Gothia Mini World Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden in July 2012.

Around 1,600 teams from 73 countries are competing in this event. More than 30,000 youngsters converge on the city over the seven-day festival.

All the participants are housed in schools and over the period 5,000 games are played on 110 sports fields, with the opening and closing ceremonies taking place in the 55,000-seater Ullevi Stadium.

Teams come from South America, India, Australia, USA, China and all over Europe – making it the world’s biggest football festival.

In Lenzie’s age group alone there are 200 teams competing

The section have already started their fundraising to make the trip, with supermarket bag-packing and sponsored events.

This section play in Division 1 of the very competitive GADYFL. They will also play training games on Monday evenings on local astro pitches to prepare for this festival.

This is the club’s fifth visit to Sweden to compete in this outstanding event which has the theme of ‘Meet the World’ and ‘Peace and Friendship through Sport’.
