A BISHOPBRIGGS Bhoy is in Paradise after starring for the Celtic first team during a glamour tie.

Former Turnbull High pupil Marcus Fraser, who doesn’t turn 17 until June, made his Celtic first team debut against Athletic Bilbao in the recent 0-0 draw at the San Mames stadium.

Doing so at just 16-years-old, with the club you’ve always supported, in front of 40,000 fans, against a side sitting sixth in Spain’s La Liga and strewn with players capped by the current World and European champions, can only leave memories that will last a lifetime.

Marcus, who plays at right-back, said: “My coach phoned me on the Wednesday to say I was to go to Lennoxtown to train with the first team the following day, then report to Celtic Park on the Friday to go to Spain.

“Three hours before the game Neil Lennon told me I was starting and then the butterflies really started to get going. But he told me before the game, ‘don’t be nervous, don’t bottle it, just play your own game’.

“I played 85 minutes and enjoyed every one of them. He told me he was pleased with my performance afterwards and so was I.”

Marcus signed a full-time three-year contract with Celtic last summer after finishing school.

Mum Karen and dad Scott were in Spain while Marcus was playing, but they didn’t quite make the big game.

The couple were in Lanzarote on holiday and by the time a thrilled Marcus phoned to say he was actually starting, it was too close to kick-off to get an internal flight.

Karen said: “We got updates from back home and we’re both so delighted for him, he’s been at Celtic since he was eight.

“He’s at such an important stage and hopefully he can make it – it’s what he wants to do and he works so hard.”

Marcus added: “My mum, dad and big sister Shawnee have been so supportive and I’d really like to thank everyone at Turnbull and Rossvale, who I played with when I was younger.”
