MINERVA let slip another good opportunity against Barrhead side Arthurlie United on Saturday.

The early exchanges saw the home side come close to scoring in the opening 10 minutes, with both Smart and Gow coming close.

Minerva did take the lead with 16 minutes on the clock with McKie slotting home after being put through by Freedman.

This lead however was only to last some 10 minutes when the visitors were awarded a penalty after Gow was judged to have tripped an opposition player in the box.

Cawley in the Minerva goal was unlucky not to get a hand to the well taken penalty.

But Minerva suffered a setback by going behind with only three minutes of the second-half on the clock.

Some sloppy defending and too many players ball watching saw the visitors forward unmarked at the back post and able to pick his spot with a strong header.

Minerva’s run of bad luck continued when they were denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty claim in the 53rd minute, an Arthurlie defender using not one but two arms to block a Duff shot.

Stand-in manager Wingate made changes on the hour mark with Krasniqi and Lenaghan entering the fray.

Their introduction saw an immediate improvement in Minerva’s attacking play.

For long periods Minerva were camped in the Arthurlie half and Gow, Smart and Krasniqi all came close to snatching the equaliser.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 84th minute when a rare Arthurlie attack saw an equally rare fumble by Minerva goalkeeper Cawley, allowing the opposition forward to slot home from close range.

The game seemed beyond Minerva at this stage but to their credit they did continue to press forward and managed to get a second goal through midfielder Smart.

Time ran away from the home side however in their frantic pursuits for an equaliser and Arthurlie were happy to leave with three points.

Minerva - Cawley, Freedman, Morton, Gow, McCaig, Smart, Duff, Allison, Coventry, McKie, Young.

Subs - Freedman, Lenaghan, Krasniqi, Andrews.
