D&D Programmes Central League Cup 3rd Round

Rob Roy progressed to the quarter finals of the Central League Cup last Tuesday night, but had to endure an agonising final 15 minutes when Ashfield fought back from a four-goal deficit to make it 4-3.

After an even opening period Rabs began to control the game wiith Gormley heading a Diack cross over the bar before Ashfield keeper Nugent blocked a Gormley shot. Rabs took the lead in the 18th minute when a move involving Fulton and Gormley gave Lindsay the opportunity to knock home the opener.

Teem had a chance for the visitors, but fired over the bar, Rabs pressure paid off again in the 35th minute when Lindsay’s inviting free-kick fell to Smith, who made no mistake from close range to put the hosts two ahead.

Five minutes later Rob Roy went three in front when McAleenan latched on to a partial clearance before drilling a drive low and hard past Nugent.

Diack made it four for Rabs in the 61st minute when he ran through the Ashfield defence before hammering the ball high past Nugent from fully 20 yards. Ashfield pulled a goal back in the 65th minute when McCann took a cross in his stride before stroking it into the corner of Robertson’s net.

The visitors added a second four minutes later when Maxwell’s header found Ferguson, who fired the ball into the net.

Ashfield’s comeback continued with a third goal in the 75th minute due to a goalkeeper ‘howler’, when a seemingly harmless Martin header – covered by keeper Robertson – was allowed to squirm from his grasp and into the net. A minute later only a timely block by Smith prevented Martin equalising.

The visitors continued to pound the Rabs defence and in the final minute of the 90, Robertson made up for his earlier error by brilliantly tipping a 25-yard in-swinging Thomson free-kick over the bar.

Five minutes into stoppage time, with gaps appearing in the Ashfield defence, Gormley ran through and evaded a tackle before sending an angular drive crashing under Nugent for Rabs fifth – calming the home support’s jangling nerves in what was a cup-tie cracker.
