Auchinleck Talbot 3
Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 0
West of Scotland Cup
Rob Roy bowed out of the West of Scotland Cup but put in a spirited performance against a talented Auchinleck side, with the outcome closer than the result suggests.
The first real chance of the match fell to Talbot but Hyslop’s shot was safely taken by Rabs keeper Wilson. Minutes later Hyslop headed a Wilson cross over the bar as the home side began to dominate, but the Rabs defence were giving little away.
The Rabs keeper did well to push a Wilson drive past the post before the Rabs’ defence survived a number of corners.
Midway through the first half Rabs began to push forward. Sawyers attacked down the left wing but his run was halted by a McGoldrick tackle. Hay had a goalbound effort blocked before Mitchell’s dangerous cross into the Talbot penalty box was cleared for a corner.
The Ayrshire side took the lead in the 34th minute when Park ran free on the left before sending over an accurate cross for Wilson to head home. Rabs responded immediately and only a fine Leishman save denied a Mitchell goal after good leading up play from Sawyers, the Talbot keeper was again in action minutes later when he pushed a Deas shot around the post.
Rob Roy began the stronger of the sides in the second half. Urquhart connected with a Deas pass but sent his shot wide of the post.
In the 49th minute Sawyers sent Duff free on goal the substitute drilled in a low shot but again keeper Leishman made another fine diving save.
Auchinleck increased their lead in the 51st minute under controversial circumstances.
As Wilson surged forward the standside assistant raised his flag indicating offside but this was overuled by the referee allowing Pettigrew the chance to square the ball for Young to knock the ball home from close range. The goal stood despite Rabs’ protests.
The home side made it 3-0 in the 68th minute when Rabs substitute defender Wilson was short with a pass-back and Gormley latched on to it before rounding keeper Stuart Wilson then knocking the ball into the vacant net.
To their credit, Rabs refused to throw in the towel. Mitchell headed a Deas free-kick against the crossbar then Sawyers sent a volley just over the bar. The same player almost snatched a consolation goal in the final minute when he took the ball past Leishman, but Pettigrew managed to slide the ball away as it was entering the empty net.
Deep into stoppage time Rabs were reduced to 10 men when substitute Wilson was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Chic Connolly after the ball had gone out of play.
