Watched from the terracing by new boss Jimmy Lindsay, Rob Roy produced a superb second half performance to defeat the Scottish Junior Cup holders – a result which took the Adamslie Park side to sixth spot in this season’s final Premier League placings.

Talbot were first to threaten when Young sent Boyle free on goal in the 10th minute but Carter moved quickly to block the shot. Five minutes later Rabs keeper Wilson did well to tip over a drive from Latta, with Slavin heading the corner over the bar.

John Boyle was prominent in Talbot’s attack with the Airdrie United-bound forward coming close to putting his side ahead with a curling shot from the edge of the box.

Talbot keeper Leishman did well to parry a Zok to safety before McCulloch’s timely tackle prevented Gow’s free run on goal a minute before the interval. On the hour mark Latta crashed a Boyle corner against Wilson’s upright before

Young fired just over the bar. Brian MacKay’s strong wing running was causing problems for the visitors’ defence as Rabs began to take control. In the 65th minute the breakthrough finally came when Gary Gow ran onto a lofted McQuilken pass over the Auchinleck defence to beat Leishman in a race for the ball and coolly slot the ball into the vacant net.

Leishman then did well to block a Zok volley, but the big keeper was helpless in preventing Rabs from deservedly stretching their advantage in the 67th minute when Gary Gow beat the offside trap to glide the ball low into the corner of the net to complete his double.

The Ayrshire side pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute.

After that a Rabs Trialist just failed to connect with a Gow cross in front of goal. He was then brought down in the box. Gary Gow was denied his hat-trick when Leishman saved the spot-kick.
