females looking to learn how to defend themselves are being urged to try a women’s only karate class.

Glasgow Karate Academy operates a women’s class from 9.30am to 10.30am in Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre on a Tuesday and Bishopbriggs Leisuredrome on a Friday.

And not only can you keep fit, but the classes are also great for your social life.

Sensei Anne Kelly, who is a first dan black belt, said: “What I found was a lot of women are keen to take up karate, but because a lot of classes are mixed they are put off.

“The ladies class, however, is not as daunting.

“We mostly have mums, as well as some young people who come along.

“It’s great for fitness and there is also a great social aspect to it as we always have a coffee afterwards.”

She added: “Karate is also great for concentration and confidence, and it is also a great stress buster.

“A lot of women think they can’t do karate, but your fitness quickly develops.”
