A COMBINED under-16 team of Allan Glen’s and Lenzie rugby players has won the prestigious West Regional Plate League in their first season together.
The squad, known as Glenzie, only formed following a late decision by both clubs to join forces at the start of the 2010/11 season.
The team lost all of their competitive games played up to the enforced winter break due to the Arctic weather in the run up to Christmas.
But that break allowed the squad to train heavily together, which forged a strong team spirit and a willingness to turn their season around.
A huge run of success culminated with a recent ‘winner takes all’ final league game against GHA, where a delighted Glenzie triumphed 19 - 17.
After Christmas, Glenzie were placed in the West Regional Plate League along with Clydebank, G.H.A., Irvine, Loch Lomond and Wigtownshire.
The results were: a win 51 - 12 v Clydebank, a win 55 - 5 v Irvine, a win 39 - 7 v Wigtownshire, and a win 39 - 10 v Loch Lomond before the final day victory over GHA.
The team averaged over 40 points a game - an astonishing return.
