ROB Roy hat-trick hero David Gormley has revealed he was set to quit football during the summer.

Gormley became an instant fans’ favourite on Saturday as he scored three, set up one and was a constant danger leading the line for Rabs, who defeated Cumbernauld United 5-4 at Adamslie Park in the League Cup.

But afterwards the former Ayr United and Alloa Athletic striker, who spent last season on loan at Elgin City, admitted he was so disillusioned with life in the senior game he was all set to hang up his boots.

The 23-year-old told the Kirkintilloch Herald: “I was going to chuck it - I was just fed-up.

“But I played with Aldo (Alan Lindsay) at Celtic youths and he convinced me to come down and try it here at Rob Roy. I’m enjoying it so far. It’s always good to get a hat-trick.”
