Hundreds raring to go for Kirkintilloch race

AROUND 250 runners are expected to take a 12.5k challenge around some of the most beautiful parts of Kirkintilloch.

More than 100 runners have already signed up to take part in the Kirkintilloch 12.5k on February 12.

People will take part from across Scotland with club runners from Fife, the Lothians and Central joining unattached and club runners from the West of Scotland.

Attracted in part by the unusual distance – the only event of this length in Scotland – and by the opportunity to gauge the benefits of winter training, some 250 runners are expected to take part.

Following a scenic route from Gartconner Primary School to Gartshore, Stoneyetts and Fauldhead, this road race provides a challenging start to the local racing year.

Race organiser Robert Rogerson said: “With 12 short climbs in the 12.5k distance this event is one that makes you work hard but the rewards of fast downhill sections and great views make it all worthwhile.”

The Kirkintilloch event is aimed at runners of all abilities and whilst some of the fastest in Scotland will be present, many are coming from the local jogScotland groups.

It is a friendly race with an excellent goody bag for all finishers.

Now in its eighth year, the race continues to attract back runners.

To enter the race, either complete the application form available from the Kirkintilloch Olympians’ website – www.kirkintillocholympians.co.uk – or enter online through EntryCentral.

The race starts at 10.20am with registration at St Agatha’s Primary School from 9.30am. Supporters and spectators are encouraged to go along and cheer the runners as they climb the hills and race into the finish at Gartconner Primary School.
