A FORMER Kirkintilloch Herald paperboy is set to fly to Thailand in a bid to become a professional fighter.

Liam McKendry (17), from Kirkintilloch, trains at the town’s M-MAG Martial Arts and Fitness Gym.

The St Ninian’s High School pupil has spent the last three years learning the art of Muay Thai boxing from trainer Mescho Dunko – himself a Scottish Super Welterweight Thai boxer.

Liam recently won his first professional title bout at the recent Martial Mayhem event in Ayr, beating an opponent seven years his senior.

And now he’s been selected from hundreds of candidates for a two-month scholarship at the world-renowned Sumalee Boxing Gym in Thailand.

Mescho said: “He’s got everything paid for – flights, accommodation and gym fees – and they’ll try to organise some bouts for him when he’s out there. He’ll be leaving for Thailand at the end of June.

“It wasn’t a great surprise to see him win his first B-class bout in Ayr, even though his opponent was so much older.

“Liam has had a lot of junior and C-class fights and he’s been used to taking on older guys.”
