Scott’s top of the lot – and he’s only 12!
Scott Connal
A RISING star from Lenzie has beaten the best in Scotland across five gruelling events to land gold in a prestigious national competition.
Scott Connal, from Lenzie, was victorious in the recent under-14 Scottish Combined Events Championship at Pitreavie in Fife – despite being only 12-years-old.
He was delighted to improve on his previous appearance in the contest, when he won silver in 2011.
The talented youngster excelled in all five disciplines – high jump, long jump, shot putt, 80m hurdles and 800 metres – to end on a total of 1824 points. His closest competitor was a distant 348 points back.
Even though he crushed his opposition, the perfectionist told the Herald he was “a little disappointed” in his hurdles performance because his time suffered from a strong headwind.
It was the latest in a series of impressive achievements for the former Millersneuk Primary pupil, who is looking forward to starting at Lenzie Academy after the summer break.
Before his latest success Scott had already smashed the Scottish high jump record for his age group, taken Scottish Championships gold in the high jump and won a silver medal in the indoor combined events championship at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall.
He also took first place in a pentathlon at Gateshead and, with his dog Tiree, successfully defended the CaniX trophy at the world-famous Crufts dog show – running alongside his pet for 2km.
Scott told the Herald: “I started athletics when I was nine and came seventh in my first race.
“It was about a year before I won my first event and this win is my biggest achievement so far.”
He added that he hopes to eventually represent his country – maybe even one day winning an Olympic or Commonwealth Games medal.
His more immediate aim is to successfully make the big step up to U15/U16 level and, in the meantime, he would love to add the Scottish U13 outdoor high jump record to his indoor one – needing to add just 5cms to his personal best of 1m 61cm.
