Westerlands Ams ...............1
West of Scotland Cup
Minerva came out the blocks like a team determined to make up for some lack lustre performances in recent weeks and with only a few minutes played both Smart and McLaughlin had good chances to open the scoring.
The home side had a clear advantage over the wee side from Lennoxtown with almost all their players being over six foot tall.
What they lacked in inches though was more than compensated in fight, determination and no little skill.
There was only seven minutes on the clock when Minerva took the lead. A good corner whipped in by Duff saw Kimmett perfectly time a run to head the ball home.
Lightbody, Kimmett and Duff were winning the midfield battle, with Smart adding more pace and determination when required in any area of the pitch.
Minerva got their second goal with only 21 minutes played. A free kick was awarded some 35 yards out and defender Graham lashed the ball towards goal.
The Westerlands keeper struggled to palm the shot onto the bar, the referee waved play on and the quick-thinking Tullis stabbed the ball home.
The second period didn’t start well for Minerva. From the kick off Westerlands went on the attack and some indecisive defending saw a low ball swept into the box escaping the reach of keeper Tait and rebounding of Graham into the net.
For the next ten minutes or so Westerlands threw everything at Minerva but couldn’t get the all important equaliser. Minerva coped well and soon began to claw their way back into the game. Lightbody in midfield was playing out of his skin assisted by the vocal promptings of the experienced Duff.
Minerva went further in front with 65 minutes played. A cute Tullis flick put McLaughlin through on goal, a deft header down to calm a bouncing ball followed by a well struck shot saw the ball nestle in the corner of the net.
Wild celebrations were the order of the day for the Minerva faithful at the side of the pitch.
Minerva had further chances that they failed to convert but this shouldn’t detract from an excellent performance.
Minerva will play St Patrick’s in the next round.
