Waterside suffered their first defeat since December, losing 3 - 2 against Steins Thistle to be denied winning League Division 1B, with one match remaining.

In a poor first half both teams had chances, but were unable to score, Steins hitting the bar & the Steins keeper saving from Fitzsimmons and Pettigrew.

Steins scored in the first minute of the second half. A through ball found the Steins striker who wrong footed Hamilton to score in the corner beating Barr.

MacDonald came close on 55 minutes, but his close range shot was blocked on the line and cleared. A MacDonald free kick on 65 minutes was flicked on by Fitzsimmons, but there were no takers.

Hughes was replaced by Mackie with 20 minutes remaining. Steins scored their second breaking from their own half, Stirling was beaten on the wing and the forward rounded Barr to score.

Steins scored their third on 78 minutes when a defensive mix up saw the ball laid back for their forward to slot past Barr.

Waterside’s resilience paid off when they scored in the 83rd minute, Fitzsimmons scoring from a Mackie flick on.

Two minutes later Waterside scored their second, Mackie heading in from a Pettigrew corner.

Waterside could have had an equaliser in the 92nd minute, but Seferi’s shot was cleared off the line.

Waterside will have to win against Cambusnethan Talbot on Wednesday 14th May to secure League Division 1B, the match, which should have been played on 7th May, was postponed due to the pitch being waterlogged.

Waterside’s Cinema Cup-Tie against St Pat’s was postponed for Saturday 10th May.

Waterside are at home to Aikenhead Thistle in the Robert Whyte Cup on Monday 12th May, 6.45pm kick-off.
