Rabs crash to cup defeat

SHOCK as Rob Roy bow out...

Central League Cup, Round One

TALK about shooting yourself in the foot. This was the equivalent of doing so with a double-barrelled shot-gun, then hacking off each toe with a rusted saw.

With nine minutes played, and completely against the early run of play, a long punt up field by Dunipace's keeper Tam Meighan saw Rob Roy centre-half Brian Wardle allow the ball to bounce, and Paul Tweedie nipped in ahead of Kevin MacDonald to lob the ball over keeper Kevin Bell.

Only 90 seconds later the same thing happened again, this time Tweedie smashing home at Bell's near post.

Before the game, the bookies were offering 9-1 on the Central League first division side beating Rob Roy, from the Super League premier.

However, the Adamslie Park side amazingly went 3-0 down after 28 minutes when Tweedie rose unchallenged at the near post to flick in a header off the underside of the bar and complete his hat-trick.

After 37 minutes, Rabs manager John Richardson replaced defender Wardle with striker Chris Zok.

Make no mistake, an early Rob Roy goal at the start of the second half could have seen them go on and win the game. Although Rabs easily had 75 per cent of the possession, Dunipace started with a narrow 5-3-2 system and never deviated from it as they made the most of their superb start to the game.

As anxious as the shell-shocked Adamslie Park men were to peg back a goal, Dunipace were 10 times as determined to stop them.

A body was always in the way and there was always a timely interception when the home team threatened to score.

Countless half chances were snuffed out and Rabs' hurried execution was poor.

Stephen McGowan rolled wide when Craig Feroz had an empty goal to fire into while Grant Anderson's spilled effort found no takers. Zok tapped tamely into keeper Meighan's arms before the best chance fell to Anderson on the hour mark.

He rounded the keeper only to shoot straight at the retreating defender on the goalline.

Gary Gow's close range shot then hit the base of the post for Rabs.

Ultimately, all proved fruitless and Dunipace's players loudly celebrated an embarrassing and painful cup exit for Rob Roy.

Rob Roy: Bell; Carter, MacDonald, Wardle (Zok 37), Sheridan; Anderson (Mills 75), Carberry, McQuilken, Gow; Feroz, McGowan (Hughes 77). Subs not used: Maxwell, MacKay, Lennox, Wilson.
