Rabs win epic battle at Adamslie
SIX goals, two red cards, a second-half more end-to-end than a basketball match, two members of the Kilbirnie management team sent to the stand, a soft penalty awarded, a stone-waller turned down and the referee requesting the cops turn up.
Any more of this at Adamslie Park and Rabs will need to raise the admission fee.
Craig Feroz kept up his impressive start to the season for Rob Roy when he slotted home a slightly dubious penalty after only five minutes.
Rabs then doubled their advantage in 19 minutes when an intelligent piece of play from Paul McQuilken saw his lofted ball to the far post volleyed in by Brian Mackay.
The dream start was improved 30 seconds later after Kilbirnie were reduced to 10 men when Simon Eeles saw red for a studs-up lunge on Scott Upton.
If the large travelling support thought that decision harsh, their mood accelerated to incandescent when Steven McGregor appeared to tug down Alan Kinney in the penalty area . . . only for referee Frank Connor to wave play on.
With the rest of the half played in an increasingly tense atmosphere, come the interval Connor requested the attendance of the police. But with Rabs on fire, Kilbirnie could have done with calling another branch of the emergency services.
Only 20 seconds of the second period had elapsed when McQuilken slammed home Upton's cross for 3-0.
Kilbirnie threw caution to the wind, going 3-4-2 in an attempt to salvage something from the game and Kinney dragged a goal back in 63 minutes.
Astonishingly, Ryan McGregor then nodded in a second from a John Paul McKeever cross six minutes later.
However, with the match on a knife-edge, Mick Hughes side-footed Mackay's low cross into the net to make it 4-2.
Rabs' young sub Ross Dunlop was shown a red card with minutes to go.
Tonight (Wednesday), John Richardson's side travel the short distance to Ashfield for a crunch quarter final clash in the league cup, kick-off 6.30pm.
That's followed on Saturday with a trip to the seaside to play Largs Thistle, kick-off 2pm.
