Rob Roy ready to get new football season underway

ROB Roy’s Jimmy Lindsay saw his squad start their pre-season training on Monday night - and the gaffer is bullish about the year ahead.

Rabs play their first competitive match against Cumbernauld United in the Sectional League Cup on Monday, August 6.

Their Superleague Premier Division campaign kicks off later that month, against local rivals Petershill on Saturday, August 18.

It will be a difficult opening game for the Kirkintilloch team – Petershill were runners-up in the league last year – but Lindsay hopes that his team have as good a start as last year, when they went unbeaten in their first five games.

The manager, who is in his second year at the helm, told the Herald: “It would be great to get a good start like last season, although it isn’t necessarily going to happen.

“We’re in a much better position at the start of this season than we were in last year. We are hoping to finish higher up the table and get further in the Scottish Cup.

“It’s such a hard division and won’t be any easier this year, but there’s no reason we can’t get into the top three or four.

“After that you never know what could happen – although the same teams have been winning it over the last five or six years and they are looking good again.”

Since last season both Kevin McBride and Chris Mackie have left the club, but Lindsay has made two headline signings in Chic Connolly from Cumnock and Kevin Bradley from Pollok.

And the squad has been bolstered by four promising young amateurs from Ardrossan.

Lindsay said: “We’re hoping the amateurs can really hit the ground running and combine well with the new players.

“We’re still definitely looking for a goalkeeper to add to the squad.

“They’ve all been training in the gym over the last week to get fit for training and the upcoming friendlies.”

Rabs’ first pre-season game is at Castle Douglas this Saturday, July 21. The supporters bus leaves Adamslie Park at 10am.

The next two weekends will see the team travel to Stonehaven and Blackburn for two more friendly games.
