Rob Roy produced an impressive display of attacking football to take a two goal advantage back to Guys Meadow for Thursday’s second leg match.

It was Rabs who made an early impact on the game and were chasing victory from the word go, with Aitken failing to make proper contact with Watt’s first minute cross. Shotts had a chance to take the lead when a short free-kick found McDowall on the left but Rabs keeper Brown managed to smother his low effort at the second attempt.

The pace of the marauding Watt was causing the home defence problems and he began the move which led to Rabs all important breakthrough in the 22nd minute when he set up Collins to cross for Willie Sawyers who was perfectly placed to knock the ball past Whyte.

Playing into a strong wind, Rabs continued to play neat passing football, Whyte made a fine diving save to prevent Collins from adding a second. In a brief spell of attacking play from Shotts, Mushet failed to make contact with a Brash free-kick in front of goal before McKay blazed over the bar from

The game could easily have been beyond the Lanarkshire side’s reach by half-time, such was the dominance of Rabs play, as it was they had to settle for an unflattering one goal half-time lead.

In the first minute of the second half Martin’s cross deep into the home penalty area was headed past his own post by defender Mushet. Rabs continued to search for the second goal, from a Collins cross Martin fired over the bar then Watt’s cross flew across the penalty box without any takers.

In the 70th minute Brash’s free-kick 35 yard failed to trouble Brown. With Rabs back four showing a display of solid defending, Shotts forwards toiled for most of the match.

In the final minute Rabs increased their lead when Watt chased a long defensive clearance to the corner flag before crossing to Sawyers who in turn sent a clever pass to the unmarked substitute

Jason McGuire to send a screamer high into the corner of the net. In stoppage time Sawyers almost made it three when his glancing header from close range was scrambled away by Whyte.
