Roch on! League Cup win for young Candy

ST Roch’s Under-21s gained a well-deserved and needed win in the League Cup section.

They got off to the perfect start after only a minute when a goalmouth scramble resulted in Ross McGhee smashing the ball home.

With the young Candy dominating it was no surprise when McGhee got his second after 10 minutes.

Although Wishaw threatened, the Roch took a further lead after 15 minutes when a Sean Griffin free-kick was headed home by Matthew Stanway.

The young Candy were tearing Wishaw apart now and on 25 minutes Sean Griffin got the fourth.

Five minutes before half-time Wishaw got a goal back when a cross ball was missed by the Roch defence and the Wishaw number nine tapped the ball home.

The second half was really much of the same without the goals for the Candy.

But eventually they got a fifth when Graeme Highlands touched the ball home over the line from a resulting corner.

The rest of the second half was mainly played in the centre of the park and Wishaw got a late goal after a counter attack.

Team: Wiles, Wood, Stanway, Highlands, Mitchell, McGhee, Carmicheal, Bailey, Griffin, G. Stewart, C. Stewart. Subs: Adams, McLaughlin, Collins, McGuire.

Man of the match: Ross McGhee.

St Roch’s 21s’ next game is away to Cumbernauld on Sunday also in the League Cup.

* The under-21s would like to congratulate their senior team St Roch’s Juniors for reaching the last 16 of the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup for the first time in almost 40 years.
