JONO Murrell was the hero of the piece on Saturday when Glens took on their age-old rivals from Anniesland in an exciting game at the Bearyards.

Allan Glen’s RFC.................. 17

Glasgow Academicals............... 13

It was the Glens pack that set the scene by being totally dominant in the scrum and gaining more than their share of lineout ball.

The home side opened the scoring after only five minutes when Murrell broke through the centre to touch down near the posts. Thomson converted, making a half-time score of 7-0.

Immediately after the break Thomson stroked over a penalty for Glens, but 10 minutes later O’Donnell kicked two penalties in quick succession to keep Academicals in the game.

Ten minutes from time Murrell broke several tackles to score – giving Thomson a easy conversion.

Not to be outdone Doig went over for the visitors with O’Donnell adding the extra points – thus giving the visitors their bonus point.

Glens 2nd XV lost heavily to a strong GHK 2nd XV, putting an end to the home side’s winning streak.

This Saturday, Glens travel to Glasgow Accies for the second round of the Regional Shield. Kick-off is at 3pm.
