A LONG-awaited cup semi-final kicked off at high noon on Saturday and it was Lenzie RFC who fired their way to victory.
Lenzie won the Bowl semi-final 14-3 against Cumbernauld at Boghead on Saturday.
For the first 15 minutes it was stalemate. The Lenzie forwards – battling against a sizeable weight advantage and the slope – were holding their own in the scrum.
Cumbernauld secured a lead after a penalty on 23 minutes, but the rest of the half belonged to Lenzie. Storming runs from Queenan and McLean were backed superbly by the rest of the pack. Lenzie scored a try just before half-time. It came after another rampaging run from Scoollar from a scrum just inside the Lenzie half. He broke right, cut inside the outside half and veered back out to avoid the Cumbernauld back row – eventually being hauled down five metres from the try line.
A quickly-recycled ball was fed to Wilson, who tried his best to make the two yards he had to go as difficult as possible!
A fine score put Lenzie 5-3 up at half-time.
The crowd expected greater things in the second half, but for some reason a constant stream of basic mistakes kept play in the Lenzie half for most of the second period. Scoollar knocked over a penalty after 55 minutes to give lenzie a five-point lead. Some fine running and tackling from Jones made sure the Lenzie line was never really under threat, but it was on a knife edge.
Eventually Lenzie started to kick the balls to the corners and apply pressure onto the Cumbernauld defence, resulting in a penalty – again converted by Scoollar. The same man added one more penalty to make the final score 14-3 to Lenzie.
Special mention must go to the front row. All four did exceptionally well considering the conditions.
The final is on March 10.
