NEWLY-promoted Lenzie RFC got their league campaign underway on Saturday, welcoming Irvine to Viewfield.
The newly-promoted hosts were hoping to get off to a winning start in front of a large home support, but it was not to be.
The visitors kicked off into a strong wind with the sun in their eyes.
Lenzie survived an early scare as Irvine seemed to have crossed the line for the opening score only for to be ruled out for a double movement.
The first 20 minutes saw a bruising encounter unfold and only fine cover defence from McBride stopped Irvine scoring after a line break.
Lenzie were awarded a penalty on 22 minutes, but Morrison’s attempt drifted wide of the posts.
This seemed to galvanise the visitors and moments later their No.8 stormed clear from a scrum and fed the open winger to score in the corner.
Lenzie’s best chance of the half fell to Tom English who broke clear from a counter attack, but his attempted pass went to ground from five yards out.
Lenzie then seemed to fall asleep for 10 minutes as Irvine piled on the pressure.
First their second row bundled over after a sustained surge on the Lenzie line and then from the restart Irvine exploited an overlap on the blind side to score a fine try.
Moments later a deft chip over was gathered by the Irvine scrum-half who fed the winger to score again. Half-time – 22-0 Irvine.
Playing into the wind in the second half seemed to suit Lenzie as they were forced to execute a running game.
The teams were evenly balanced with the breakdown and set piece being hotly contested at every turn.
Irvine slotted a penalty on 55 minutes to extend their lead and five minutes later their No.8 wreaked yet more havoc, picking up from the scrum to thunder over the Lenzie line.
Lenzie got their reward for their endeavours on 67 minutes as Brett crashed over to touchdown for their only score of the match after hard yards were won by Saunders and Scoullar.
In the final play of the match Irvine took advantage of a Lenzie handling error to feed their winger and complete the day’s scoring.
Lenzie RFC........................ 7
Lenzie will take plenty away from this game as the hard-hitting visitors showed exactly what it takes to compete in this league.
This Saturday, Lenzie travel to Kilmarnock, kick-off at 3pm.
