The Scotsman Rugby Show: Episode 14
THE LAST Scotland captain to taste victory at Twickenham, Jim Aitken, is one of five legendary internationalists in this week’s show looking back at the 1983 success and forward to this weekend’s opening RBS Six Nations Championship match.
The former Gala and South prop recalls the build-up to the game 30 years ago alongside Roger Baird, how he knew victory was within their grasp and what it felt like celebrating inside Twickenham. Former Scotland full-backs Andy Irvine and Ken Scotland give their exclusive verdicts on what we should expect this weekend along with another veteran of the 1983 triumph, tighthead prop Iain Milne.
Elsewhere in the programme we turn the spotlight on the ambitious and controversial plans to re-develop Raeburn Place and give Edinburgh Accies a chance to flourish for another century at the historic birthplace of international rugby.
Gordon Bulloch, another ex-Scotland front row and captain, looks back on his international career in our popular ‘Five Quick Questions’ and there is also a spot of controversy in our club action this week with our cameraman getting the best view of the try scored by Jon Welsh, the Glasgow and Scotland prop, for Ayr in a narrow win over Heriot’s, which was hotly disputed at Goldenacre on Saturday.
We also have footage from Hawick’s defeat of Kelso in the Mansfield mud - was this the worst pitch played on this season? - which keeps alive the Greens’ dreams of returning to the Premiership, and from the British and Irish Cup clash between London Scottish and Gala at Richmond, after mighty efforts by both clubs to clear snow.
