Scottish Cup 4th Round

Waterside travelled to Finzean, in Aberdeenshire, for this fourth round Scottish Cup-tie with opponents Feughside.

In glorious weather conditions, Waterside started strongly with J M Kerr’s first minute shot being tipped over the bar by the opposition keeper. Feughside came close when G Passmore slipped, but the forward’s effort went over. Feughside came close in the 10th minute - one effort going over, the other hitting the bar.

Carr’s header from a Stephen Kerr corner was cleared and Fitzsimmons and Caldwell had 25 yard efforts saved. Thomson’s shot on 18 minutes was blocked. Carr should have scored on 23 minutes but somehow managed to hit the ball over from six yards out with the keeper beaten.

The injured Gannon was replaced by D Passmore midway through the first half. With seven minutes of the first half left, Feughside scored, breaking on the counter attack and the forward slotting into the bottom corner giving Barr no chance. Barr saved well in the final minute of the first half to keep ‘Side in the tie. After some stern words at half time, ‘Side started the second half with more purpose and belief, Fitzsimmons levelling for ‘Side.

Man of the match Caldwell gave Waterside the lead in the 66th minute, scoring direct from a corner on the left side. JM Kerr’s effort six minutes later was touched out for a corner. Carr’s 22 yard free kick, with 15 minutes to go was well over.

Barr saved well two minutes later following a Feughside counter attack. The home team levelled the tie with five minutes to go, ‘Side failed to clear their lines and the forward side footed the squared ball into the net.

‘Side responded immediately, JM Kerr broke on the right and scored from the touchline, the ball evading everyone and finding the top left corner. ‘Side kept their composure and saw out the 90 minutes and additional six minutes of injury time without incident. Waterside have no game next week, Saturday, December 10.
