Stobhill team set for tough adventure
A team from Stobhill Hospital is to take part in a prestigious adventure racing event for the first time next month.
Team Alpine Bikes, which was formed in 1998, and is also known as the Stobhill Roughnecks, is take part in the the Wilderness ARC, a five day non-stop race through the Highlands, starting at Fort William on August 22.
The event is a world championship qualifying round, which is being held in Scotland for the first time.
Since the team was formed, it has taken part in over 20 races across the UK, including events in mountain biking, canoeing, climbing, orienteering and getting from A to B as quickly as possible, which in most cases is without sleep, cold food or drinks.
The team has been helped thanks to the staff fund at Stobhill, which was provided funds to help buy two new bikes, a nine-man tent and a CD mapping system.
Alpine bikes are providing the team kit, and a grant from the national lottery has helped cover the cost of the entrance fees and training courses for the race.
In the past, the Staff Amenity and Patient fund has helped the team with entrance fees for some of the races.
