YOUNG boxers proved to be real knock-outs recently when they were crowned Scottish Novice Champions.

Andrew Carr and Cameron Garden, both aged 15 and members of Kirkintilloch Amateur Boxing Club, took part in the 2012 championships in Ravenscraig.

More than 400 people pulled on their gloves for the competition.

Andrew was up against Kieran Lochran and showed a lot of maturity – digging deep to ensure victory in a hard fight.

Cameron took on Reece Johnstone in what was one of the closest fights of the championships. He shaded it by just one point to make the final, where he beat Hiaree Razul.

Meanwhile, Dylan McNeish (11) – also from the Kirkintilloch club – won his first fight in the Newarthill youth and novice show.

He was up against L. McDonald from Port Glasgow and boxed really well in his first contest.

Club coach James Carr said: “The boys did the club and themselves really proud. They hadn’t boxed competitively for almost two years.

“Dylan has just started and boxed really well. He showed a lot of promise for the future.”

Kirkintilloch Amateur Boxing Club was started in 1965 by Hugh Doherty and his uncle. Hugh passed away last year and his son, also called Hugh, took over at the club.
