This week David Hepburn talks to Angela McClaren (38), the new manager of the Regent Shopping Centre in Kirkintilloch.
Angela, who started her new job last week, lives in Cumbernauld with husband Rory and their 10-month-old daughter Samantha.
Where did you work before arriving at the Regent Centre?
I was a bingo manager at Carlton Bingo in East Kilbride for four years but, before that, I was an assistant manager at the Regent Centre.
There's always a job in your life which you wish you hadn't left, and that was the case with the Regent Centre, I was really happy to return.
It was really a case of being in the right place at the right time, I was very lucky.
I was in the centre picking up some boxes the day before I moved house and some of the staff mentioned the job to me, so I thought I'd go for it.
What was your first job?
I worked in hotel management until I was about 26. I worked all over the country, including One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow, the Westerwood Hotel in Cumbernauld and the Craigendarroch Hotel in Ballater.
When I worked at Craigendarroch, we had a visit from Prince Charles, which was great fun.
There were hundreds of security people everywhere and it was very exciting.
Princess Diana used to pop in for a swim with William and Harry occasionally, and we would have to chuck everybody out and close off the pool.
Did you meet any other famous people while working in the hotels?
I met lots of famous people at One Devonshire Gardens like Lulu, Billy Connolly and Andrew Ridgley, from Wham.
Lots of bands like the Blue Nile also used the hotel to 'meet and great' fans.
Why did you leave hotel management?
I just really wanted to have a life. It's rewarding and great fun, but summer doesn't exist when you work in the hotel business as you tend to work seven days a week for two or three months over the holiday season.
I do miss it, but it's really an industry for the young.
You have a great social life, but when you want to settle down and have a stable home life you need to move on.
What is your favourite thing about your current job?
The best thing is that it's such a varied job and I deal with lots of different issues every day - from events and promotions to health and safety inspections. No day is ever the same.
A lot of the staff and tenants
have been here for a long time and it was nice to see so many familiar faces when I arrived back.
It's really fantastic to be back and I'm looking forward to taking part in things like the Canal Festival and our Farmers Market. The next one is on Wednesday, July 16 and I look forward to seeing lots of our customers there.
Did you enjoy working in the bingo hall?
It was great fun and, again, I got to do lots of different things like calling the bingo on important games.
We had one person who won £108,000 on a national game when I worked there, and the largest prize when I was calling the numbers was £90,000.
When I went to tell the woman how much she had won I was shaking - I think I was as excited as her.
What do you do in your spare time?
We've just moved house, so at the moment my time is taken up with decorating the home.
Other than that I try to spend as much time as possible with my husband and daughter and our cat and dog.
I really love my computer games, but haven't really had time to play them for the past three weeks or so because of moving house and moving jobs.
The latest thing I'm into are the brain training games on the Nintendo DS.
What would be your ideal job?
I'd love David Attenborough's job, but he doesn't look as though he'll be relinquishing it for some time yet.
