THIS week Caren McPate talks to Steven Archer, football and fitness manager at Petershill Park sports and fitness facility in North Glasgow.
The 25-year-old former footballer, from Bishopbriggs, has been based at the centre for just over a year.

When did your interest in football start?
When I was young I always played football.
PE was my favourite subject at school and I loved tak
ing part in all sports.
I played with the Livingston and Stirling Albion youth teams, and then went on to play for Stenhousemuir and Clyde, as well as Rob Roy.

Why did you stop playing?
I was getting constant injuries to my ankles and knees.
I also wanted to pursue an education in sport and fitness, so I went to do a personal training diploma.

Do you miss playing football?
I wish I could have taken it a bit further, but it's just one of these things and I do really enjoy what I'm doing now.
However, I still enjoy playing in fives or seven-a-side games.

Where else have you worked?
While doing my diploma, I worked at the Esporta gym in Finnieston, which later changed to Virgin Active, for about three years. I was a fitness consultant, personal trainer and deputy manager.
The management side was really interesting and give me a taste of how a health club is run.
I also did freelance personal training.

How did the job at Petershill come up?
I was looking for a new challenge and my dad spotted an advert in a paper.
It seemed perfect because it involved football and fitness.

What does your job involve?
I supervise the day-to-day running of the fitness and football side of the facility, bring in new clients and network with the five partners of Petershill Community Initiative (PCI), which runs the centre.

Is it quite a satisfying job?
Yes. We see people from all walks of life coming into the centre and it's great to see them improving their fitness, losing weight and improving their diet.
We ran a holiday camp for children during the Easter holidays and 100 people turned up each day.
I wish I had something like the facility when I was young.

What do you enjoy?
Dealing with all different types of people and corporate groups.
I like that the centre is trying to make a difference in the local
community. It's been such an accomplishment for the area to see it develop.
When I came for my interview it was still a building site, but now it is a great place.

Do you work much with Petershill Juniors?
As their stadium is part of the centre, we have a close relationship with the club.
They are also of the partners of the PCI.

Do you have any hobbies?
I like to keep myself as fit as I can so I do quite a lot of swimming, jogging and try to go to the gym most nights.
