THIS week reporter Katy Whitelaw speaks to Kevin Sherry, lead vocalist and guitarist with band Attic Lights. Kevin (29) is originally from Bishopbriggs and his band released their debut album Friday Night Lights to critical acclaim in October.
When did the band form?
Colin (bass/vocals) and I met at Turnbull High School. We decided to form the band just after university in 2001 because we both had a love of music and couldn't get proper jobs!
Where does the band name come from?
We used to practise in Colin's mum's attic.
What jobs did you do before the band was signed?
I worked in the complaints department for STV for three years.
The most bizarre complaint we had was from someone who said they were watching a science documentary and their TV started levitating. I told them to put a concrete slab on top of it.
I also worked in Fopp in Byers Road.
Did you consider giving up the dream at any point?
No - me and Colin have always been obsessed with making it so it was one of those things that we never considered.
What has been the biggest highlight of the last year?
Playing all the massive festivals. Wickerman, Connect and V were fantastic. I am a huge fan of festivals so it was a bonus to be playing them.
What has been your biggest gig?
T in the Park 2007 as that was what started all the record company interest in us.
What is the best gig you have played?
King Tut's in 2007 in front of all the record company big wigs. We were signed by Island that night but it was nerve wracking.
What is the best crowd you have played to?
Glasgow definitely has the best fans. They are the wildest audience and make it more exciting for the band.
What have the band planned for 2009?
We are probably looking at releasing another album at the end of next year. We have a lot of songs ready to go as any time we have a day off we are working on new material.
Did you enjoy growing up in Bishopbriggs?
I enjoyed it and it was pivotal as it is a part of who I am.
If you could have been in any other band which one would it have been?
The Smiths or REM.
Who are your main musical influences?
I had eclectic taste when I was growing up and my parents had a big influence on me. I love bands like The Beatles and the Beach Boys.
Do you have any hobbies?
I enjoy running and swimming. It is easy to be unhealthy when you are in a band so you need to look after yourself.
I used to write scripts and it is something I would like to have a bash at later in life.
What would you still like to achieve with the band?
To break the USA. We hope to go there next year.
What is next for the band?
We are releasing double-A-side single 'Late Night Sunshine'. We've also been asked to do the theme tune for a remake of TV show Minder. We are covering 'I Could Be So Good For You' for the new series on Five.
