THIS week Alistair Mackay talks to Kennedy Fraser, a volunteer at GRF Christian Radio.
The 50-year-old IT consultant from Lenzie has been involved with the organisation for more than 32 years. GRF Christian Radio has supplied programmes to 150 radio stations worldwide since it was formed in Glasgow 60 years ago.
Kennedy is married to Hilary and has two children, David (17) and Rachel (14).
Where did your interest in computers stem from?
I think IT must appeal to my brain. I'm a problem solver and that is what IT is all about.
I actually originally trained as a primary school teacher - but I was hitting the market when there were no jobs at all.
I had spent five years studying at Jordanhill so I said to them I know about computers and education and they gave me a job developing software.
How did that lead to you volunteering with GRF Christian Radio?
As a teenager I was interested in radio engineering so I went along to find out what they did and I've been there ever since.
"Everyone who volunteers loves listening to the radio and they all come from various personal and work backgrounds. So it is a real creative outlet for us all, which is part of the appeal."
What kind of things do you produce?
Someone once said we produce adverts for Christianity which is true as a lot of the stuff is very short.
But what we are really trying to do is provide a talking point for people with a Christian faith while, hopefully, providing others with the view that there might be more to Christianity than they thought.
Humour plays a large part in it too. We wouldn't be doing this unless we enjoyed it and we try to portray that.
It is fun, but with a serious side.
Have you considered setting up a radio station?
We never really wanted to be an actual radio station.
We want to provide content for other people to transmit and fit into everything else they are doing on their stations.
In 1948, when GRF Christian Radio was founded, it was first broadcast to Scottish ex-pats in South America.
So they sent something to an audience instead of setting something up and hoping the audience would come to them.
Do you think there will be a point when you decide to hang up the microphone?
I have gotten so much out of it. It has been a huge part of my life for more than 30 years so it would be difficult to step down.
However, if there ever comes a time when there is no demand for our programmes, we will shut up shop.
"But that doesn't look like happening any time soon so I think I'll keep on going."
Other than working with GRF Christian Radio, do you get the chance to do anything else in your spare time?
My church activities take up a lot of my time. I'm a lay reader at St James the Less Episcopal Church in Bishopbriggs.
I'm also a member of a sailing club, play bass in the church and love spending time with my family.
My son, David, also volunteers with me so I have a pretty unique situation where I have a teenage son who actually speaks to his father!
